Remembering Yvonne Mokgoro | Special ceremonial sitting to honour late Justice

File: The first black woman to be appointed as a judge in South Africa, Yvonne Mokgoro is sworn in at the first Constitutional Court's opening ceremony in Johannesburg 14 February 1995. The Court was opened by President Nelson Mandela, who told the judges that they were expected to be "creative and independent" and not just another rubber stamp for government. 

 

JOHANNESBURG - The Constitutional Court will hold a special ceremonial sitting, honouring and remembering the late Justice Yvonne Mokgoro.

Mokgoro was laid to rest last week.

She was the first woman appointed to the Constitutional Court in 1994.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and his deputy, Mandisa Maya, will attend the special sitting.
