MAHIKENG - Mahikeng residents are hoping the incoming council will address the city’s deteriorating infrastructure, with pothole-riddled roads and broken streetlights among their biggest concerns.
Once regarded as a prominent administrative centre, the North West capital is increasingly being described by residents as a ghost town, with landmarks such as the iconic Mmabatho Stadium and Convention Centre left in disrepair.
Ward 33 independent councillor candidate Rapellang Hobane says fixing roads and restoring streetlights would be among his priorities if elected.
He says potholes have become so severe that residents jokingly refer to them as swimming pools and even oceans, while poorly lit streets are raising safety concerns.
With the November 4 local government elections approaching, residents are looking to the next council to reverse the city’s decline and restore basic services.
