SA given the green light to pass through the Strait of Hormuz

JOHANNESBURG - Iran has granted South Africa passage through the Strait of Hormuz, despite rising tensions in the Middle East.

Experts warn, however, that while there may be some relief for South Africa, it won’t be smooth sailing.

Chris Hattingh from the Centre for Risk Analysis has cautioned that rising global oil prices, a weaker rand, and increased pressure on key imports could still have a significant impact on the country's economy.

"If the supply of global fertiliser, either directly from countries in the Middle East, including from Iran, if that supply dries up, and number two, supply from other countries that moves through the Strait of Hormuz, if that is constrained or dries up, it will impact the South African agricultural sector, which is going into a harvesting season."
