DURBAN - The Durban port descended into chaos last year 70, 000 containers unable to be processed and ships queuing out to sea, while trucks lined up to get in.

South Africa is now starting to count the cost of the ripple effects across the economy.

Some retailers like Woolworths reported the late arrival of stock and others reduced their promotional advertising in what should have been the bumper month of December.

One estimate is that Well the South African Association of Freight Forwarders says that delays at ports have cost the South African economy around R98 million a day.

While the movement of around R7 billion worth of goods has been impeded.
