SARS cracks down on e-filing fraudsters

JOHANNESBURG - South African Revenue Service (SARS) has confirmed the key dates for the 2026 tax filing season.

It's also announced system upgrades designed to make filing faster, easier, and more secure.

According to SARS commissioner Johnstone Makhubu, they are focused on their three strategic objectives, among which is ensuring a seamless process to meet taxpayers' obligations.

At the same time, he said the enhanced system will also strengthen its ability to detect fraud.

“We know that as we launch this filing season, there are also bad actors in the ecosystem. They are already approaching people and selling them all manner of schemes in order to be able to gain impermissible refunds from the system. We want to send out a warning to say we are watching and our systems are geared up to pick up those types of bad actors,” he added.

The taxman is expected to collect R2.1 trillion in revenue this season.
