JOHANNESBURG - AfriForum has raised concerns over the invasive plant species taking over the Vaal River.

The organisation is calling on government to take immediate action.

Certain sections of the river are covered with a blanket of water lettuce and hyacinth, which are known to spread at alarming speed.
It's been a longstanding problem at the Hartbeestpoort Dam, and now the Vaal, an important source of water for Gauteng, is under threat.

Dr Sean Phillips, Director-General of the Department of Water and Sanitation spoke with eNCA.
