South Africans optimistic while tightening belts

JOHANNESBURG - Despite the rising cost of living, South Africans are entering 2026 with a cautious but determined optimism.

A new TransUnion Consumer Pulse Study shows households are adapting their financial habits, cutting back on spending, prioritising savings and becoming more digitally aware.

Ayesha Hatea, director of research and consulting at TransUnion South Africa, said many households are making practical changes to stay afloat.
