And despite global progress, women and girls remain significantly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) is trying to up the game in this field - by empowering young women from underserved communities to become leaders and innovators in these critical fields.
Moleboheng Mokhatla, who is the head of Science department at the academy told eNCA how they are doing this.
