WATCH | Cape Town township pupils score dozens of distinctions

CAPE TOWN - Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park, Cape Town, services pupils from surrounding townships and informal settlements.

The school has consistently been achieving matric pass rate percentages in the upper 80s.

The class of 2023 were no different, and achieved a pass rate of 88.7%.

Several of the pupils achieved 5 distinctions each, while one pupil scored 7.

The principal says bagging 164 Bachelor Passes shows the school is focused on quality education rather than quantity.

The top achievers come from informal settlements where crime, unemployment and poverty levels are high.

No desks, no wifi and often no power in their homes, just determination to succeed.
