Pit toilet death | Naptosa says parents deserve answers

Naptosa executive director, Basil Manuel says it's a sad situation and the girl's parents deserve closure.

JOHANNESBURG - Naptosa executive director Basil Manuel says someone needs to take responsibility for the death of an Eastern Cape primary school pupil, reportedly in a pit toilet.

Manuel says it's a sad situation and the girl's parents deserve closure.

"Remember this target was for 2013, ten years later we haven’t yet eradicated pit latrines and by now when we talk about the dignity of schooling or as we are currently in Human Rights month.

"When we talk about the human rights of children, this surely comes into play, the quality of schooling is not what is should be so we are happy that there has been progress made," he said.

"We know and we’ve had reports as a union about the things that have been done to date however we want to see this stepped up. We can't in the 21st century about pit latrines and of course the tragedy that unfolded. Now we don’t have the details but I want to say that the parents some answers."
