Beyond Game Day | The hill that made the champion | 7 July 2026

Preparation Changes Your Relationship With Pressure

“This is where I’m going to win the race.”

That is not just a sports line. It is a strategy line.

George Kusche said it while reflecting on the hill that helped decide his Comrades victory. The power of the line is not bravado. It is preparation.

He knew the hill. He had studied it. He understood how long it would last and what it would demand.

That changes everything.

Most people meet pressure as uncertainty. The best prepared people meet pressure as information.

George’s story is not a clean highlight reel. It includes a ten-month layoff, gaining 21kg, rebuilding his body, and learning from a difficult 2025 Comrades that being fit is not enough.

“You need to consistently show yourself that you’re capable of doing hard things.”

That line may be the real framework.

In leadership, teams often wait for confidence before acting. But confidence is usually not the starting point. Evidence is.

You build evidence by keeping small promises.

Wake up. Train. Do the hard thing. Repeat.

In business terms, this is operational trust. In sport, it is mental toughness. In life, it is the quiet proof that you can believe yourself when the moment gets heavy.

“Fitness is not enough” is also a useful warning.

Talent can get you into the race. Energy can carry you early. But durability decides what happens when the hill arrives.

George Kusche’s Comrades win is a South African sports story, but it is also a performance lesson.

Preparation does not remove pressure.

It gives pressure a shape.

And once you know the shape of the hill, you can decide whether it breaks you or becomes the place you move.
