SAHRC to grill food industry

JOHANNESBURG - The second leg of the South African Human Rights Commission's (SAHRC) inquiry into the country's food system is under way. 

The week-long hearings will examine whether South Africans have adequate access to affordable and nutritious food.

Food producers, retailers and other stakeholders are expected to testify.

The inquiry follows concerns over rising hunger and food insecurity.

This despite South Africa producing enough food to feed its population.

The hearings will focus on food prices, market concentration and the role of the private sector in shaping access to food.

The Commission says the findings will help identify solutions to strengthen food security and protect the right South Africans have to sufficient food.
