Average food basket increases to nearly R5500 in May

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are continuing to battle rising food costs, with the latest Household Affordability Index showing the average food basket has increased to nearly R5500 in May.

The Index, which tracks prices of basic foods across several provinces, shows vegetables and staple foods recorded some of the biggest price hikes.

Carrots jumped 16 percent, while tomatoes and cabbage rose by 11 percent.

Although some items like oranges, apples and beef became cheaper, economists warn households remain under severe pressure. Wages are just not keeping up with the cost of living.

The report also highlights the strain on minimum wage earners. After paying for transport and electricity, workers are left with just over R2000 for food and other essentials.

Researchers say many low-income families are being forced to buy less nutritious food, worsening hunger and health risks across the country.
