Cosatu welcomes ban on alcohol advertising

JOHANNESBURG - Cosatu is welcoming the tabling of the Liquor Amendment Bill in Parliament.

It aims to ban alcohol advertising and product placement.

Critics, however, say it will negatively impact small businesses and the township economy.

There are also concerns on the impact on the creative industry.

Cosatu Parliamentary Coordinator Matthew Parks said the country has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

"About 40 percent of our 14,000 road casualties every year, car accidents, are linked to alcohol consumption," he said.

"Alcohol has a huge linkage to domestic violence, to gender-based violence."
