GDP increases by 0.8% in second quarter

JOHANNESBURG - The economy picked up some pace in the second quarter of 2025, with GDP growing by 0.8 percent.

That's up from a modest .1 percent in the first quarter.

Driving this growth was the manufacturing industry, rising by 1.8 percent.

The trade, catering, and accommodation sectors also showed strength, climbing 1.7 percent.

This was due to increased activity in retail, motor trade, and tourism-related services.

Mining made a solid comeback, growing by 3.7 percent.

On the downside, transport, storage, and communication shrank by .8 percent, weighed down by slower land transport.

The construction sector also dipped by .3 percent, with both residential and non-residential projects losing ground.

Maarten van Doesburgh Head of Department, Economics, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, said this is above what was forecast.

"We're seeing that there's been an increase across trade, we may see in the following quarter that that may set back a little bit."
