This has pushed airline operating costs sharply higher.
The spike has been driven by a near doubling in jet fuel prices in recent months, forcing airlines to pass on costs to the consumer.
Fuel now accounts for more than half of total operating costs.
Operators confirmed that surcharges are already in effect as they attempt to offset rising input costs.
