JOHANNESBURG - There was more shopping in June, despite pressure on consumers.
Retail trade sales increased 1.6 percent year-on-year in June, extending a modest recovery in consumer spending.
General dealers and other retailers were the biggest contributors to growth during the month.

However, on a monthly basis, seasonally adjusted retail sales slipped 0.6 percent in June compared with May.
Retail sales rose 1.7 percent in the second quarter, suggesting consumers are still spending despite economic pressures.
Lower inflation and no further rate hikes may support shopping in the months ahead.
