BMA steps up security at the Lebombo border ahead of Easter weekend
JOHANNESBURG - Border delays are costing the economy up to R16 billion a year.
The findings were presented at the 44th Southern African Transport Conference.
Researchers from Stellenbosch University say congestion at Lebombo, Beitbridge, Groblersbrug and Vioolsdrift is disrupting regional trade.
The study estimates that trucks lose 68,000 hours every week while waiting to cross these borders.

Heavy vehicles queue for an average of 24 hours, with delays at Beitbridge stretching beyond 57 hours.
Researchers warn the delays increase transport costs, disrupt supply chains and make South African exports less competitive.
They are calling for digital border systems, pre-clearance processes and better coordination between neighbouring countries to cut waiting times.
