In attempts to simplify the tax return process, SARS has automated tax assessments for some people.

In attempts to simplify the tax return process, Sars has automated tax assessment for some users.

Troost says over three-million South Africans have been identified and sent auto assessments.
He said, "we should remember its only in its third year and its still in its infancy."

"SARS is still trying to figure out the systems and make it work seamlessly."

"SARS is busy gathering all the third party data from your banks, medical aid and retirement annuity and populating the return on your behalf and thereby they can use AI in order to calculate your tax liability or the refund and then have that prepopulated and sent to you via sms and you can either accept or reject that assessment."

"It’s always wise to still open the return and look what has been prepopulated and see if you agree with it…If you not sure, you can approach SARS."

"SARS has just identified about 3.5 million tax payers to which they sent auto assessment smses."
