JOHANNESBURG - South African Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are starting to become profitable.
This is according to the latest Shoprite's State of the SMME in South Africa report. It is based on research among 800 businesses by World Wide Works.
According to the report, 42 percent of SMMEs describe themselves as growing and expanding.
That is up by 33 percent from last year, but it is still less than half.
The Shoprite Group's Maude Modise says small businesses are staying the course.
"At scale, however, is still an issue," she says.
According to the report, there are businesses that are operating for over 20 years and employ up to five people.
"There is an opportunity to start a business; people are starting businesses," says Modise.
