South Africa leads Africa in digital fraud cases

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa recorded the highest rate of suspected digital fraud among African countries analysed by TransUnion.

Three percent of the country's transactions were flagged as potentially fraudulent.

The report found that a third of the victims who lost money to online fraud were targeted through scams on legitimate e-commerce platforms.

Account logins were identified as the biggest attack point as fraudsters increasingly focus on taking over existing accounts.

Government services were the most targeted sector with a suspected fraud rate of 12.5%.

TransUnion says criminals are using increasingly sophisticated, AI-driven tactics, and is urging both consumers and businesses to strengthen their digital security measures.
