WATCH | SARS on tax implications of truck attacks

At least 21 trucks have been torched since Saturday in five separate incidents spread across KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.

JOHANNESBURG - The South Revenue Service says the truck attacks could have dire consequences for the country's economy from a customs perspective.

Currently, South Africa benefits from trucks coming through points of entry.

There are now elevated safety concerns as there is a risk that operators will find alternative routes via neighboring countries to transport their goods.

"What those who believe that it is okay to interrupt these trades, goods, and services but ultimately we are harming ourselves because to the extent that these goods do not reach the ports of exit, of exports then it means that many of those goods will go to waste and it means a reduction in foreign currency that is then returned to South Africa for the goods that we export," Sars Commissioner Edward Kieswetter.
