Cape crime hotspots still awaiting SANDF

CAPE TOWN - While Western Cape communities wait for the army to arrive, violent crime continues unchecked.

Since the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 12 February that he would be deploying the army to crime-ridden areas, gang-related shootings have not stopped.

Last week, more than 80 people were killed and 65 attempted murders were recorded.

Members of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence said they are being left in the dark regarding the deployment, thus hindering their oversight responsibilities.

Nicholas Gotsell, a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, said the committee wants to make sure that the troops have the logistics support they need and that the money is spent wisely.

Some military convoys have been spotted rolling into the Western Cape.

Police said this is part of preparations for their much-anticipated deployment to identified hotspots in and around Cape Town.
