Former IDAC head Andrea Johnson has concluded a record six days of testimony at the Madlanga Commission. Johnson conceded that her office deviated from internal processes while investigating senior Crime Intelligence officers, including engagement with people outside the institution. Chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga questioned whether that amounted to undue influence.
IPID is investigating whether police action caused the death of Nigerian national Chika Ibeh during a Bellville raid. Preliminary post-mortem results found multiple bruises and abrasions after police initially said he collapsed and became unresponsive.
Sizakhele Dyantjies has been appointed Western Cape Police Commissioner, succeeding Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile.
Section27 has taken Basic Education and provincial departments to court over failures to vet teachers against the National Child Protection Register. The organisation says only 10% of teachers have been checked for sexual offences.

In Japan, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on Kyushu has killed at least 13 people, with dozens missing and rescuers searching collapsed buildings.

UEFA says FIFA has “crossed a line” with plans to seek private investment in a proposed $20-billion commercial-rights subsidiary that would run World Cup competitions. The proposal still needs approval from FIFA’s 211 member nations.
The Betway Premiership begins this weekend as defending champions Orlando Pirates host newcomers Milford FC. Nigeria suffered a late 3-2 Women’s AFCON defeat to Malawi.
And finally, Lara van Niekerk defended her Commonwealth Games 50m breaststroke title. Nathan Hendricks and Danika Vyncke won silver, while Team SA’s mixed 4x100m relay set an African record and helped Chad le Clos become the joint most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete.
