Western Cape police are investigating two mass shootings that left seven dead and five injured in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain and Philippi East. In Mitchells Plain, gunmen opened fire outside a tuck shop, killing three. Police later responded to Marcus Garvey, where seven people were shot.
In Gauteng, three suspects in the Cleveland mass shooting are back in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court seeking bail. They face 13 murder and 14 attempted murder charges after the Jumpers settlement attack.
Outside the Malawian embassy in Pretoria, conditions are worsening for hundreds sheltering in freezing, unsanitary conditions. Human rights activist Mariam Jooma-Carikci says the crisis raises questions about humanity and accountability.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The final report is now due on 16 November, with evidence until 2 October. Anti-corruption expert Dr Alberto Schoeman unpacked flaws in the asset disclosure regime.
The commission’s Recommendations Task Team has arrested four suspects in Johannesburg, including current and former Ekurhuleni employees. Former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi has also been ordered to report to police.
National Treasury says withholding funds from 69 municipalities will improve service delivery. Treasury says R13.5-billion has been withheld from a R110-billion budget. Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busisiwe Mavuso has welcomed the move.
Hopes for lower farming input costs are fading as renewed Middle East conflict raises shipping concerns in the Strait of Hormuz. AgBiz Chief Economist Wandile Sihlobo says fuel and fertiliser make up roughly half of field-crop costs.
