It’s Thursday, 30 April 2026, and this is News Bite, your fast, reliable update on South Africa and the world, with Marcelle Gordon.
The poor state of municipalities is in the spotlight as President Cyril Ramaphosa convenes an extended President’s Coordinating Council meeting in Boksburg, bringing together mayors, municipal managers and leaders of the national water crisis committee. Ramaphosa is warning that failing infrastructure and misdirected municipal funds are worsening the water crisis and deepening service delivery failures, while Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa says the deteriorating state of Johannesburg is expected to feature heavily in the discussions. SCOPA chair Songezo Zibi is also turning up the heat on municipalities failing to maintain effective internal audit measures, as the SIU probes widespread maladministration and corruption.
South Africa’s local government elections will take place on 4 November, with key registration drives expected in the coming months. The announcement sets the clock ticking for parties, municipalities and voters as service delivery, corruption and local accountability move back to the centre of the national political agenda.
Abroad, the Pentagon estimates the public cost of America’s war on Iran so far at 25-billion dollars, while asking for 1.5-trillion dollars more for munitions and defence in the 2027 fiscal year. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced tense questioning before Congress’s Armed Services Committee, where lawmakers pressed him on the Trump administration’s claims around Iran’s nuclear threat and the economic cost of the war to American taxpayers.
Brent crude oil has hit a near four-year high, rising to 120 dollars as supply concerns deepen with the Strait of Hormuz still blockaded. Brent crude, which South Africa imports for fuel, has now risen for eight consecutive days, while the International Energy Agency has described the closure as the largest supply shock on record. Rand Swiss portfolio manager Viv Govender weighs in on what the oil-price spike could mean for markets and consumers.
The fuel crisis is expected to keep squeezing the price of goods, especially food. South Africa recorded a 2.3 percent increase in food prices in April, with government’s fuel levy decision offering some short-term relief. But with 30 out of 40 essential foods, including rice, bread and chicken, already costing more, Mervyn Abrahams from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group says household budgets are under growing pressure.
The Madlanga Commission continues its investigation into alleged corruption in the City of Tshwane, with suspended director of Asset Protection Services at the metro’s traffic police department, Tshukudu Malatji, back in the hot seat. Malatji is implicated in controversial tenders, including an R800-million security tender awarded to Gubis85 Solutions.
New NPA head Andy Mothibi says more arrests are on the way, with an eye on testimony given at the Madlanga Commission. Mothibi was speaking at the National Press Club as the country marked 30 years of the South African Constitution.
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says the power to grant any further extension for the Madlanga Commission rests with President Cyril Ramaphosa. She has told Parliament that additional funding is needed for the Commission to continue carrying out its mandate.
We’re also keeping an eye on the manhunt for gunmen who set three trucks alight on the N3 highway in Vosloorus. Police say the suspects blocked the route and opened fire while attempting to hijack the vehicles. The drivers managed to escape, and Gauteng police have opened cases of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
A cold and wet long weekend is expected across parts of the Northern Cape, North West and Free State. The SA Weather Service has issued Orange Level 6 and Level 4 warnings for strong winds and heavy rain, with localised flooding possible in affected areas.
