It’s Tuesday, 23 June, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says he supports the views of anti-illegal migration protesters, but has warned against criminality as South Africa braces for the unofficial 30 June deadline given by some groups for foreign nationals to leave the country. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia is expected to meet premiers, while authorities say law enforcement will act against anyone taking the law into their own hands. 

In KwaZulu-Natal, police are investigating the murder of a Malawian national in Pietermaritzburg after a March and March protest turned violent. The 29-year-old was allegedly stoned to death at the Jika Joe Informal Settlement. Two others were injured. 

The legal heat is still on Peet and Mel Viljoen. After Peet Viljoen’s arrest following deportation from the US, the alleged Tammy Taylor SA franchise scam is back in focus. The Hawks have concluded their probe and the dockets are now with prosecutors. 

The IEC says almost half a million first-time voters registered during the weekend’s voter registration drive. Political parties are being urged to help mobilise voters ahead of the elections. 

Across Europe, a deadly heatwave is gripping France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany and the UK. A Mpumalanga cop dancing in uniform is facing disciplinary action after a video of him singing and dancing in full SAPS uniform was widely circulated on social media. 

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, new data shows that 70 percent of Grade 1 to 3 learners cannot read at the level expected for their grade. Basic Education assessed almost 28,000 pupils in more than 700 schools. 

The Supreme Court of Appeal has set aside a High Court order to repatriate the remains of late Zambian president Edgar Lungu, keeping the legal battle between his family and government alive. 

SPORT

Lionel Messi has broken Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup goal-scoring record after scoring twice for Argentina against Austria. Messi now sits on 18 World Cup goals, while Kylian Mbappe is on 16. Ghana face England tonight, while Ardie Savea has been named All Blacks captain ahead of The Greatest Rivalry tour. The Boks face England at Ellis Park on 4 July, but England will travel without rested captain Maro Itoje.
