A sixth accused has been added to the Emmanuel Mbense murder case. Jaun Maree Eksteen appeared with suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and four others as they applied for bail. The State opposes bail in the Schedule 6 case.

The DA wants Ekurhuleni to fast-track Mkhwanazi’s disciplinary hearing, saying he should not keep receiving a salary while suspended.

Parliament is launching an inquiry into gang violence after deadly shootings in Langa, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Reiger Park. Ian Cameron says families and communities must help shape solutions. Police are also stepping up operations in Eldorado Park.

CPUT has withdrawn its 2027 Draft Financial Recovery Plan after protests over a proposal requiring up to R7,000 to start the academic year. Further consultation will follow.

Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela says isolated failures should not tarnish all TVET colleges after oversight visits found unqualified staff.

Authorities are still trying to identify 14 suspected illegal miners killed in a rubble collapse at an open-cast mine in Marikana. Locals say illegal mining has left them living in fear.

The General Mining Laws Amendment Bill proposes tougher punishment for illegal mining. Lawyers for Human Rights warns against focusing enforcement only on illegal miners.

Five people stranded by heavy snow on Sentinel Peak in the Drakensberg have been rescued after rescuers battled dangerous conditions to reach them.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent condolences after 44 people died in a Lake Kariba ferry disaster. Zambia is also voting, with President Hakainde Hichilema seeking a second term against an opposition alliance led by Brian Mundubile.
