eNCA News Bite | Migration protests, Phala Phala and Iran’s World Cup base | 26 May 2026

It’s Tuesday, 26 May, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

Concerns grow over anti-illegal migration protests as political analyst Justice Malala accuses the justice and security cluster of being “asleep at the wheel” amid rising protests and rhetoric around illegal migration. Rwandan development consultant Teddy Kaberuka says African governments must manage cross-border movement without undermining the economic role of migrants. The Charlotte Maxeke Hospital repair crisis is also back in focus as the health and finance ministers visit the facility after a Public Protector report flagged delays, poor coordination, mismanagement and a major funding shortfall.

Also today, President Cyril Ramaphosa is asking the Western Cape High Court to review and set aside the Phala Phala report, arguing the independent panel misunderstood its mandate and relied on hearsay. The report forms the basis of the National Assembly’s impeachment process, while the 31-member impeachment committee has now been named. Health officials are racing to respond to an Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC and Uganda, with Netcare calling for stronger border and disease monitoring and South Africa pledging a $5-million contribution to the Africa CDC.

We’re also watching the Pope’s warning on artificial intelligence, as he calls for world leaders to regulate weapons systems moving beyond human control. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is meeting City Power and Eskom over Joburg’s disputed R5-billion debt, while farmers have won a High Court ruling allowing them to buy their own foot-and-mouth disease vaccines.
