Freezing temperatures, disruptive snow and heavy rain have swept across South Africa. Disaster teams are on high alert in the Eastern Cape and Free State, while travellers on KwaZulu-Natal’s N3 are urged to drive carefully.
In the Eastern Cape, snow has disrupted R58 mountain passes but also drawn crowds to Barkly Pass. Johannesburg City Power is battling more than 3,600 open outage calls as cold and wet weather strains the network, also affecting water supplies.
South Africa’s unemployment rate has risen to 33.6%. Stats SA says 121,000 more people entered the labour market.
At the Madlanga Commission, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga reprimanded suspended MP Fadiel Adams over missed commission updates blamed on a malfunctioning laptop.
A possible ransom demand has complicated the search for missing two-year-old Milano Tlali. A woman says she received voice notes demanding money for his safe return. Pregnant South African Nqobile Malangeni has been detained by US Homeland Security and could be deported. The US has also revoked over 175,000 visas.
In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Donald Trump is demanding compensation from Iran, while Tehran wants compensation, an end to sanctions and military threats before reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Israel has rejected a US plan to disarm Hamas. A 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia has killed more than 130 people, with rescue teams searching rubble and hospitals in five cities on red alert.

The All Blacks have made 15 starting changes for Tuesday’s Sharks clash in Durban after beating the Stormers 38-21. h Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy headline Tuesday’s Betway Premiership action. Liverpool supporters want answers over proposed investment from a consortium including Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, with a possible 30% stake worth up to £1.4-billion.
