200 more schools needed in Gauteng to address overcrowding

JOHANNESBURG - More than 200 schools are needed in Gauteng to address the shortage of schools in Gauteng.

This comes as classroom overcrowding in many schools, especially in the townships, persists.

Gauteng's public schools face 30 or more children in a single classroom.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile's department now believes a public-private partnership could be the solution.

"To build 200 schools, you will R35-billion. Our budget currently is R70-billion," he said.

"R52-billion of that money goes to salaries of educators, R8-billion of that money goes to schools directly. That's one of the things that causes problems in the schools," he said.

Education experts say the first step is to understand how bad the problem is, and now it’s time to do something about it.
