Gauteng schools buckle under overcrowding crisis

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng faces a crisis of overcrowding in schools.

The average pupil-teacher ratio sits at 70 to 1.

Former Education MEC Matome Chiloane admitted demand is outstripping the delivery of new schools.

He said around 200 new schools were needed.

Now it's up to his successor, Lebogang Maile, to deal with the crisis.

He will visit the Bovet Primary School in Alexandra and later unveil his plans to address the crisis.
