JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's water crisis appears to be deepening.
Figures from Statistics South Africa's 2025 General Household Survey show that nearly 57 percent of households experienced water shedding last year.
The report also reveals that more than a third of households endured water interruptions lasting two days or longer, a figure that has increased from the previous year.
Solly Molayi, acting Deputy Director-General of Population and Social Statistics at Stats SA, said households interviewed indicated that water interruptions have increased.

"Largely, these are the metros who are experiencing this. It shows us that those in the metros are more likely to experience water interruptions."
Molayi said Limpopo and the Eastern Cape have seen long-term declines in household access.
Gauteng and the Western Cape are under pressure due to rapid urbanisation and informal settlements.
