JOHANNESBURG - The ANC has won its bid to have 181 candidates included on the ballot for the 4 November local government elections.
On Thursday, the Constitutional Court ordered the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to take the necessary steps to include the party’s candidate lists and nominations on the ballot.
In a brief majority judgment delivered by Justice Rammaka Mathopo, the court granted the ANC leave to appeal the Electoral Court’s ruling last month and set aside its order.

The dispute centred on the ANC’s candidate list submissions for six municipalities.
The party challenged the IEC’s decision to exclude its candidates, arguing that it had met the submission deadline but that a technical problem with the commission’s online system had prevented its lists from being properly captured and processed.
Last month, the ANC approached the Electoral Court, arguing that the system failure had prevented the successful submission of its candidate lists. However, the court dismissed its appeal.
The dispute affected six municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Eastern Cape.
