Communities urged to help army and police end crime

PRETORIA - National police commissioner Fannie Masemola urged communities to support the army as it helps police fight crime.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved the deployment of over 2,000 soldiers to help fight crime.

Operation Prosper will bring the heat to gangs and illegal miners in  Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

The army will also help bring law and order to the Free State and North West for the next year.

"Public safety is a shared national priority. The fight against crime cannot be won by law enforcement alone," Masemola said.

"It requires partnership with communities, cooperation across government institutions, and sustained national commitment."
