CAPE TOWN - The Cape Peninsula University of Technology student body is demanding an urgent investigation into the institution’s finances. The SRC argues that withdrawing the proposed financial recovery plan isn’t enough.
The university says only senior and working students would have had to contribute, and the funds were only intended for extra activities.
A security guard was hospitalised after Wednesday night’s violent protest.
The protests stem from a proposed financial recovery plan, which informed students they would need to pay R7,000 at registration next year.
The SRC says it was not consulted.
On Wednesday, students submitted a list of demands to the institution, including a call for the VC’s resignation.
They also demanded that students affected by the NSFAS accommodation cap, should receive their certificates.
But the university insists the recovery plan is not a response to a financial crisis.
Police say two male students were arrested at Bellville campus. No arrests were made at Wellington or District 6 campuses.
The university says it anticipates that teaching and learning will continue online for the rest of the week.
