JOHANNESBURG - Vote counting and capturing for the 2026 Local Government Elections continues, with the IEC saying good progress is being made.
Thousands of results still need to be processed and verified. However, as the numbers come in, South Africa’s political landscape is becoming clearer.
Some municipalities could be headed for coalition governments.
By early Friday morning, about two-thirds of the votes in eThekwini had been counted, with uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party leading with 44% of the vote.
Based on the current figures, the party is projected to secure 11 seats in the council.
The Democratic Alliance, which had secured 20% of the vote, had not yet secured any seats in the council.
ANC national spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli said the party was hoping to secure about two seats.
Despite the current projections, the ANC is expected to secure proportional representation seats.
Ward seats will be determined once the seat allocation formula is applied.
