Gauteng parents urged not to miss 2027 school admissions

JOHANNESBURG - Don’t miss the 2027 online admissions application window, the Gauteng Department of Education has urged.

Online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 will open on 5 August and close on 4 September.

Department spokesperson Onwabile Lubhelwana says parents should submit all the required documentation on time to avoid disappointment.

In previous years, the province received a high volume of applications, which resulted in system glitches.

However, this year, the department says it has improved the system and is urging parents to be better prepared.

"We urge parents to be on time and be organised," said Lubhelwana.

Gauteng experiences high levels of inward migration, with many families moving from other provinces.

This places additional pressure on the province’s schooling system as parents seek placement for their children.

"The capacity of the system has improved greatly," said Lubhelwana.

"This year, the system can take up to 40,000 a minute, so we will not have glitches or anything disturbing our systems," he adds.

Lubhelwana said parents may select up to five schools when applying. He urged them to use their correct residential addresses, as incorrect information has previously resulted in learners being placed at schools that were not their parents’ preferred choice.

"This may even delay the application process," said Lubhelwana.

"As things stand, if you submit the correct documents, your child will be placed at the school of your choice," he says.

The department has not indicated whether the application deadline will be extended.
