Gauteng schools face tougher action over crime and indiscipline

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile wants to end criminality in the province’s schools.

At a recent raid by education and police authorities at schools in Alexandra, an assortment of weapons, including knives and bullets, was found.

Seven pupils were also arrested for allegedly setting East Bank High School alight.

"It can't be that we have learners that are ill-disciplined," said Community Safety MEC Roche Mogorosi.

"They are damaging state property and are seen by other learners at the school premises as if nothing happened," she said.

Maile said he is concerned not only about the ill-discipline of pupils, but also about teachers.

"Others leave early," he says.

"It is no surprise that we find these things during the search and seizure operations," he adds.

Maile has vowed to continue the crackdown on schools across the province for the foreseeable future.
