I am sure there's something more to this, says Masemola outside court

PRETORIA - "I don't know what is happening, maybe someone knows," says suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.

Masemola appeared before the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Wednesday as accused number 17, alongside Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and several other high-ranking officials.

Unlike the others he appeared with, Masemola does not face fraud and corruption charges. However, he is charged with contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

The charges are linked to the R228-million Medicare tender. While the tender amount had previously been reported as R360-million, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has since revised it to R228-million.

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) says it has a watertight case against Masemola, but he maintains his innocence.

"I am sure there is something more, I just don't know," he said outside of the court.

Masemola added that he is waiting for the process to play out and remains firm in his claim that he is innocent.

The matter has been postponed to 26 June for further investigations, verification, and disclosure of the docket.

The State said it had obtained new evidence and needs at least six weeks to complete the necessary verifications.
