PRETORIA – Suspended police boss Fannie Masemola has appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court alongside Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and other high ranking police officers.
Masemola faces charges of breaching the Public Finance Management Act. Matlala and the 12 other officers have been charged with fraud and corruption.
The charges are linked to the R228 million Medicare tender. While it the tender amount has previously been reported as R360 million, the National Prosecuting Authority has revised it to R228 million.
The matter has been postponed to 26 June 2026 for further financial investigations, verification and disclosure of the docket.

The State said it had acquired new evidence and needed at least six weeks to complete the necessary verification.
Matlala’s legal representative petitioned the court for his client to remain at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility. The court granted the request.
Matlala was previously held at the super-maximum eBongweni Correctional Centre in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal. He was moved to the facility in December.
All other accused except Matlala are on bail.
Speaking outside of court, Masemola said he believes there is a greater motive behind his case.
“I think there is more to it. I don’t know what is it. But somewhere, somehow, there is a greater motive. But we will wait for the processes to unfold but I know I’m innocent,” he said.
