CAPE TOWN - Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee is set to meet on Tuesday to deliberate on key issues as it prepares to begin its substantive work.
The committee is expected to consider legal advice from the Chief Legal Services Office on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s objection to the recommendation that Advocate Thandazani Madonsela be appointed as evidence leader for the impeachment process.
The meeting comes ahead of the hearing of Ramaphosa’s bid to overturn the Section 89 Independent Panel Report on the Phala Phala matter.

The legal challenge is set to be heard in the Western Cape High Court from 2 to 4 September.
Impeachment Committee chairperson Makashule Gana said the committee would also work towards finalising its terms of reference.
“It’s going to look at two main items. The first one being the legal advice or legal opinion that we’re going to receive from the CLSO as it relates to the objection that President Ramaphosa made to the recommendation of the committee of recommending Advocate Madonsela as the evidence leader for the Impeachment Committee.
“We are also going to move closer to finalising the terms of reference for the committee,” Gana said.
The committee is expected to begin its substantive work once the outstanding legal issues have been addressed.
