NatJOINTS says security measures in place for safe elections

JOHANNESBURG - The 2026 Local Government Elections will officially get underway with special voting on Monday, with the security cluster assuring South Africans that measures are in place to ensure a safe and orderly electoral process.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJOINTS) says security arrangements have been implemented across all nine provinces, metropolitan municipalities, districts and policing precincts.

NatJOINTS co-chairperson Lieutenant Tebello Mosikili says voting stations have undergone security assessments, with deployments guided by identified threats, vulnerabilities and operational requirements.

The security operation will follow an intelligence-led, risk-based approach, supported by contingency plans, roving operational teams and specialised units to ensure authorities are prepared to respond to any eventuality.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is also on standby to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in identified hotspot areas.
