JOHANNESBURG - Police are raiding businesses in the Johannesburg CBD in a crackdown on counterfeit and illicit goods.
The operation is being led by the SAPS National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit.
It forms part of ongoing efforts to combat the manufacturing, distribution and sale of counterfeit goods.

Illicit trade is estimated to cost South Africa’s economy around R100 billion every year.
Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said the operation is still under way.
“This is still an active operation led by our National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit. They are supported by several internal and external stakeholders, including the Tactical Response Team, Public Order Policing, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Home Affairs.
“It forms part of our ongoing efforts to dismantle the illegal trade in counterfeit goods.
“You asked why we found some of the shops closed. It’s possible that the visible police presence in the area alerted shop owners or staff to vacate the premises. However, that has not stopped us. We are executing seizure warrants and will continue carrying out our respective mandates," she said.
“So far, we have seized several items, including counterfeit clothing, sports apparel, footwear and electronic goods such as chargers and Bluetooth devices.
“It’s important to understand why dismantling this illegal trade matters. Counterfeit goods not only infringe on the intellectual property rights of brand owners, but they also pose serious health and safety risks.”
