GQEBERHA - The long-awaited Steve Biko Inquest is set to hear its first witness on Tuesday.
The reopened inquiry was nearly derailed by a funding dispute after Legal Aid South Africa rejected the Biko family’s application for legal representation.
The Department of Justice has since stepped in to cover the family’s legal costs, clearing the way for proceedings to continue at the Gqeberha High Court.

Biko died on 12 September 1977 from injuries sustained while in police detention.
No one has ever been held criminally liable for his death.
