Witness recounts Joe Sibanyoni assassination attempt

JOHANNESBURG - Emotions ran high in the South Gauteng High Court on Tuesday in the trial of alleged underworld kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his co-accused.

A security guard who was on duty at the complex where an alleged attempted hit was carried out on Joe Sibanyoni, testified about what unfolded that night.

He told the court the suspects opened fire on him after realising he had seen them.

Bethwell Cele told the court that a red a red Ferrari arrived followed by a white Golf 7.

He was with his control manager, whom he referred to as "Mazibuko".

A white BMW passed moving slowly as if the occupants were looking for something. The BMW then made a U-turn and came into the car park where the Ferrari and Golf 7 were.

He said two men came out the car and drew an AK-47.

"They saw that I saw them and shot and missed me. Mazibuko said we should run," Cele testified.

He will be cross-examined on Wednesday.
