14-year-old girl caught in the crossfire of Cape turf wars

CAPE TOWN - Teenager, Alnika Mitchell was killed in Cape Town on Sunday after being caught in turf wars gunfire.

Mitchell and her friends were sitting, watching matric dance farewell celebrations when shots rang out.

Her grandmother says she remembers chasing after the shooter, unaware that Alnika had suffered a fatal strike.

In Cloetesville, the Peitersen family is desperately hoping for the return of two their children.

A four-year-old was shot in the neck, while a seven-year-old sustained an arm injury.

Their grandmother Julia Pieterson recalls the tragic scene. 

Community leaders and activists says something has to be done. 

Among those is Cloeteville activist Magdalene Blanken who claimed shooters have one prime motive to harm and kill with no care if a child is caught in the crossfire. 

The community is calling on residents to stand together, rise up and stop this persisting crime

Alnika’s alleged killer, a known gang member, is set to appear before court on Wednesday
