JOHANNESBURG- The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says at least 1.7 million people registered or updated their voting details during the past voter weekend.
Of the 1.7 million transactions recorded, 291,000 or 16% were persons registering for the first time.
Additionally, 1.5 million or 84%, were persons already registered who inspected and updated their registration details.

Electoral Commission CEO Sy Mamabolo provided an update on Monday on the final voter registration weekend held across the country this past weekend.
Mamabolo said KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest activity, followed by Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
As the voters' roll grows ahead of the November local government elections, the Commission is now shifting its focus to candidate nominations and the next phase of the electoral timetable.
“This will usher in key electoral milestones, dates, and time frames for critical processes, including candidate nomination, certification of the voter's roll, and other activities leading up to Election Day on the 4th of November," he said.
