ActionSA rejects City of Joburg's R97.1 bn budget

JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA has rejected the City of Joburg's R97.1 billion budget.

The party says its concerned about spending priorities and the financial burden on residents.

The budget includes R88.3-billion for operational costs and an R8.8 billion capital expenditure budget aimed at tackling the city’s ageing infrastructure and improving service delivery.

Nompumelelo Edward, ActionSA councillor said the party will only support a budget that is pro-poor centered around the working class.

"We want a budget that really recognises and is responsive also to the lived experiences of our residents. Ordinary working class and the ordinary resident in Johannesburg currently do not benefit from this budget," Edward said.

She said the budget was similar to the one delivered last year and lacked implementation.

"Infrastructure continues to collapse before our eyes. The roads continue to collapse. Sewer continues to spill in all communities and infrastructure generally continues. The City needs to review its expenditure patterns. They need to cut unnecessary spending patterns. They need to look at their vanity packs and cut them. They need to reduce excessive contracted services. As ActionSA we advocate for in-sourcing of cleaners and securities.”
