JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) is facing a legal challenge over an alleged R40-million debt owed to digital services company Eltel for services provided during the 2019 elections.

Eltel founder Asif Casoojee says repeated attempts to recover the outstanding amount have been unsuccessful.

Court documents show Eltel is seeking to recover the original R24-million debt, along with R13-million in interest and R2.9-million in legal fees.

Casoojee has approached the South Gauteng High Court, seeking an order directing the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to redirect funds allocated to the ANC towards settling the outstanding debt.

The matter is set to be heard on 27 October.
